Chlorine gas leak at Colorado high school pool

One person was hospitalized after a chemical leak at a high school pool released chlorine gas into the area. The patient’s age and identity were not released.

The incident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on September 10, 2020, at the Littleton High School in Colorado. A custodial crew was inside the school when firefighters were called to the building.

According to South Metro Fire Rescue, a mixture of chlorine and muriatic acid was released in the control room of the pool.

Hazardous materials units responded to the scene and suited up in level A hazmat suits to enter the building.

Firefighters found chlorine gas levels were isolated within the pool area and worked with the building engineer to determine what systems were available to ventilate the area.

A decontamination area was set up for crews to safely leave the building. Officials said the injured person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
