The California Pool and Spa Association is cracking down on the underground economy.
Addressing this issue requires collaboration, and that's why the CPSA has been actively working with California’s Contractors State Licensing Board (CSLB) and the Employment Development Department (EDD). The CPSA has joined EDD and CSLB investigators in their operations to catch cheaters and help level the playing field by creating a 'hotline' for a fast and easy way to report cheaters.
Unfortunately, consumers encourage underground economy contractors by continuing to hire them solely due to their lower prices, overlooking the implications of supporting such illegal practices. This pricing disparity places an additional burden on legitimate and responsible contractors who abide by all regulations, including workers' compensation insurance and payroll tax requirements.
The pool and spa industry is confronted with rising expenses, such as providing extra vacation days, paid time off for family obligations, sick leave, and other obligations unique to California. These legitimate expenses make it increasingly challenging to operate a compliant business within our industry.
CPSA is committed to standing up against unfair practices and advocating for the rights and protections of workers in our industry, and it recognizes that a collective voice can have a more significant impact. It encourages California industry members to become actively engaged with CPSA/PHTA.
