Sally Cortez and her husband were about to go to bed when they heard what sounded like a massive explosion just outside their home in Oklahoma City, OK.
“We were about to turn off the TV and everything and just heard this loud boom, crash noise — thunder, rain, something,” Cortez said.
The sound was a car crashing through their fence and landing in their pool.
“The first thing we saw was this big hole in the fence and saw that half the tree was gone and then looked closer and there was something in the pool,' Cortez said. They called 911, and fire crews arrived in minutes. Capt. John Chenoweth, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department, said they tried to get there as quickly as possible.
“We did jump in,” Chenoweth said. “We did remove the patient through the sunroof.” The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
Chenoweth said it's believed the driver experienced a medical emergency and hopped a parking lot's curb before colliding through the fence and landing in the pool.
More than 12 hours after the fatal accident, wreckers and a crane were brought to the scene, and dive crews attached straps to secure the vehicle and lift it from the pool. “My heart just bleeds for the family, the man,” Cortez said.
