Hot tub malfunction causes electrical fire

A hot tub electrical malfunction caused a house fire.

The incident occurred in Ypsilanti, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, on February 27, and resulted in $80,000 in damages.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, although the residents have been displaced.

Crews from the Ypsilanti Fire Department arrived at about 11:30 a.m. to find smoke and flames in the attic and more smoke coming from the back of the single-family, onestory home.

While extinguishment was occurring, the residence was searched due to conflicting reports of occupants inside. The fire was quickly extinguished with the search confirming no occupants. The scene was cleared at 2 p.m.

Fire Marshal Clifton Pope said the fire was caused by an electrical mishap with the owner’s hot tub, but he did not provide additional insight.
