An Ohio family was taken to the hospital when the pool chemicals they were mixing produced a toxic gas.
The incident occurred in Eastlake on June 13 and affected three adults and two children.
Adrianna Sarota said that the victims were her family members.
“My grandpa was mixing chlorine into a tank for the pool when it exploded,” Sarota said. “They had chemical burns. My grandpa had burns to his eyes; my grandma had burns to her eyes; my mom couldn’t breath; and my little sister and cousin had chemical burns on them.”
A neighbor said that while he didn’t hear an explosion, some of the residents in the house said there had been one.
“The kids came running to my house crying, saying there was an explosion in the house and everybody was passed out,” said neighbor John Putney. “When I ran over, the owner of the home was on the front porch with his wife. Some of the kids had burns on them, and they were coughing and choking.”
Though family members reported hearing an audible boom, Eastlake Fire Chief Ted Whittington said they were not sure if there had been an actual explosion, but they were sure a chemical reaction had taken place.
“We know the family was prepping to shock their pool, so they were using chlorine inside of the house to prepare for that,” Whittington said. “We know at least a chemical reaction happened inside the house that generated a chlorine cloud. There was at the time 11 people inside of the home; some of them were upstairs. The family out of necessity got out of the home as soon as they could and got a garden hose and started rinsing everybody off because their eyes and skin were burning.”
The family was taken to local hospitals after reporting burning eyes, trouble breathing, and minor burns, but all are said to be in stable condition.
